DPS-MIS holds English language Teaching Workshop

 

DPS-Modern Indian School in association with Oxford University Press, India, organized a workshop on ‘English language Teaching’ for teachers held in the Pearl Hall of the School recently.

 

 

 

Noted ELT expert and educationist Prof. Paul Gunashekar conducted the workshop for English teachers of the Primary, Middle and Secondary level of the school.

 

 

Paul Gunashekar has been teaching English, training teachers of English and developing instructional materials for English Language teaching for over thirty-three years.  Educated in Bangalore and London, he is a Professor in Centre for Materials Development at the English and Foreign Languages University (formerly CIEFL), Hyderabad. Presently he is having the additional responsibility of Proctor in CIEFL, Hyderabad.

 

The two-day workshop saw the participation of 72 teachers from different prestigious schools of Doha. The workshop aimed at providing support and to equip the teachers with effective teaching methods, resources, and activities that can be implemented in the classrooms.

 

 

 

On the first day of the Workshop, Acting Principal, Ms. Asna Nafees welcomed the resource person with floral presentations, Headmistress, Ms. Shibanti addressed the gathering, followed by a short cultural programme.

 

 

 

The participants in the workshop for both the days were English Language teachers from Al Khor International School-Indian Stream, MES Indian School, Philippine School, Pakistan Education Centre, Shantiniketan Indian School, Birla Public School, Doha Modern Indian School, Ideal Indian School, Pak Shama School and the host School.                     

                                                           

 The workshop dealt with current trends in English Language teaching and had special emphasis on common errors of Pronunciation and usage, correct usage of vowels and Consonants, various aspects of Reading and higher order Thinking skills, group discussions, Vocabulary teaching, Prose teaching, grammar teaching(collocations with common verbs, concord or agreement of Verb and subject), innovative methods and techniques in  Poetry teaching and its level of understanding, listening skills, critical Reading, Controlled and functional writing skills, picture composition and creative writing. The second day of the workshop focused on CCE (Continuous and comprehensive Evaluation) Testing and Assessment, Clauses in Grammar teaching, critic appreciation in Literature Teaching and Teaching Speaking using correct stress on words and sentences.    A number of worksheets, Reading comprehension and Fluency tasks were discussed and worked out, followed by interaction and group work by teachers.   

 

DPS-MIS, Executive Member Mr. Sunny Varghese gave out the participation certificates at the close of the first day’s workshop; while DPS-MIS senior Vice President Mr. Yasir Nainar who was present at the closing of the 2nd day’s workshop handed over the certificates to the teacher participants of the Middle and Secondary Schools. Quoting from childhood instances, he said “Give your best to the children entrusted to you as they are the future of the nation.”      The Valedictory function concluded with presentation of Memento to Resource person Mr.  Paul Gunashekar and Mr. Maninder Singh. The vote of thanks was rendered by Ms Sarbjit Kaur on the 1st day and Mr. Umesh Kumar, Head (English Department, DPS-MIS) on the 2nd day of the workshop.     

    

The Workshop concluded successfully on happy notes.
