Debate club-Debate Workshop on 'Case Building'

DPS Modern Indian School debaters Krithika Kannan, Meenakshi Mukherjee, Adrija Bhattacharya, Ahaan Gupta, Ayaan Ali Shaikh, Mukunth Madhavan, Aarav Singh, Amir Nawaz Razvi Syed, Ishant Datta along with their coach Ms. Jaya Majumder attended a session on ‘Case Building’ on 15th February 2023 organized by Qatar Debate.

The resource person Mr. Mubarrat Wassey made students think inside the box and capture the important details rather than always looking around them. He started off by talking about the 4 key elements of case building, which are Definition, Context & Framing, Preemption and Arguments.

After the discussion students were engaged in brainstorming ideas based on certain motions like This House Would legalise child labour in developing countries, This House Would ban guns, This House Would ban zoos, etc. Then a representative of each team was required to present a case on why they supported or opposed the motion. Mr. Wassey then gave pointers on how to enhance each speech by going into the details of principles and policies.

The workshop clarified that it is better to go extreme and stay consistent rather than moderate and sound inconsistent or even contradictory. The workshop ended with students clearing their doubts and comments.
