An informative debate workshop was held on the 2nd of April, 2023. The illustrious workshop was organised by QatarDebate on the topic of "Ethical Practices in Debate" for many talented debaters from all over Qatar. 13 promising debaters Azhar Jaleel Muhammed, Aritra Ghosh, Jereni Cathreen Jeyakaran, Vaidehi Rogiye, Saara Bhardwaj, Gargee Vivek Kanade, Archit Chhikara, Ishant Datta, Krish Nagrani, Sharvi Patwardhan, Aryaman Adhlakha, Ziya Fathima Rasik and Sidrah Mahvish along with their coach Ms. Jaya Majumder attended the workshop to enhance their skills.
The resource person Mr Abdur Rehman tried his best to broaden the horizons of the aspiring debaters by introducing moral dilemmas in different situations. Comprehending ‘Consequentialism’ and ‘Utilitarianism’ was the first step in understanding the theories. First, he explained the classical ‘Trolley theory’ followed by Immanuel Kant’s ‘Deontological Ethics’ and ‘Constructualism’ of Thomas Hobbes. He discussed many different moral standpoints with examples from practical life.
The workshop engaged in many philosophical trappings, all three theories tackled inaction vs accountability, where preservation of moral purity is put on a weighing scale when compared to the impact, positive or negative, action or inaction is going to have on society. The view of a person of themselves as a “good person” is inherently put into question.
The topics of the workshop piqued the interests of the debaters, making it an interactive and responsive workshop. Certainly, the workshop effectively communicated and passed on its message to the attendees. Overall, the workshop was conducted with great command and helped the debaters to understand the sensitive topics in the world of debating in a much better way.
