Debaters shine at Protea Pre WSDC Tournament 2023
DPS Modern Indian School debate team ‘Blue Oak’ bagged the Runner Up Trophy of the Novice category at Protea Pre-WSDC hosted by the South Africa Debate organization on 23-25 July 2023 via the web platform Zoom. The school had 3 teams participating in the tournament along with their coach Ms. Jaya Majumder and Drishti Tibrewal of Grade 12 as adjudicators. The tournament had 40 teams consisting of many WSDC teams and had more than 150+ debaters from all around the world. The tournament consisted of motions ranging from social media, Politics, Education, Art to Climate Change etc.
In the novice category, Team Blue Oak, consisting of Abhimanyu Gupta, Surya Kauthik, and Mehull Girdhar, secured the 2nd position with 4 victories and advanced to the Semi-Finals. Team Red Mahogany claimed the 3rd spot with 3 wins and qualified to the Semi-Finals, while Team Pink Laburnum, comprising Vyusti Singh, Aamina Bedi, and Govind Krishna, finished in 8th place. During the Semi-Finals, Team Blue Oak and Team Red Mahogany faced off each other, resulting in a fierce and nail-biting round where Team Blue Oak emerged victorious and advanced to the Novice Finals. In an exhilarating and tension-filled debate against South Africa Development Assassins in the Finals, Team Blue Oak narrowly lost with a 3-2 Split decision, securing the title of Novice Runners-Up in Protea Pre-WSDC 2023 under the guidance of their coach, Ms. Jaya Majumder.
Individually in the novice speaker category, Vyusti Singh tabbed highest bagging the 12th place, Mehull Girdhar and Surya Kauthik tied for the 19th place, Prithwiraj Purkait at 29th place, followed by Abhimanyu Gupta at the 32nd place, then Archit Chhikara on the 39th position, Nikkil Dcruz at the 46th position, followed by Aamina Abedi at 59h place and finally Govind Krishna at the 63rd position.
Overall, the tournament was a amazing and exciting experience for all the debaters who learned more from the high quality teams to add to their knowledge and experience for their future.
